Noho August 2022

Last week Rm 11 and 12 had a noho at Tawhitinui. We had the support of Whaea Waikohua and the older students of Te Puna Matauranga on Wednesday. Students had workshops at Puketoki Reserve, analysing water quality, a loop track walk, boys had a taster of mau rakau led by some of the boys from TPM, and the girls worked on their Tauranga Moana in particular their wiri. There were a couple of brilliant camp concerts, a talk from guest speaker Mark Nicholas Jnr, and a rainy trip to the pools.

A huge learning experience for all involved, massive thank you to all those who helped provide kai and āwhina in order to make the trip possible.

Mark Nicholas, water testing, and a bush walk. On Week 4 Term 3 Room 11 and 12 had a noho at Tawhitinui we stayed in the wharenui. My favourite parts were the water testing and Mark Nicholas coming to talk.

We had a talker named Mark Nicholas who was the great grandchild of Wiri. He came in and said he was funny because he tried to trick us but he didn't. He also brought props. My favourite was the wiri leaves. It was for us to remember about the person who created the marae.

Water Testing was my second highlight. My favourite part of it was checking for nitrate. A lot of farmers put it in their farm so bugs don't come in and destroy their plants and into the water but lucky there wasn't that much in it. We also checked if the water was cold or warm that includes the trees and temperature.

I cant wait till next term camp and I hope that other kids have the opportunity we had.

On the 17th of August 2022 Rooms 11 and 12 went to Tawhitinui marae to stay the night. We went to the hot pools and did a camp concert.

We went to some private hot pools and had lots of fun. One annoying thing was getting water in my ears. For lunch, we had hot chip sandwiches.

My proudest moment was doing the Mauao play. l was the narrator so l had all the lines. It was very exciting and fun.

I loved the trip and hope we can do something like this again sometime, and l am looking forward to term 4 camp.

In Week 4 Term 3 on Wednesday and Thursday, Room 11 and 12 went to Tawhitinui marae. We learnt about William Nicholas and sang Tauranga Moana and more cool stuff.

On Thursday we learnt about William Nicholas. He is a father of 24 who sadly died. He had 11 kids with Marion who died soon after. He fell in love with Rose wife number two who had 12 kids and kid number 24 was his adopted granddaughter.

On Wednesday after dinner we all got 20 minutes to come up with a skit or song. The first group was a Mauao. The second group was a Takurua sing-along song. We were last we all sang Tauranga Moana. At the end, we all giggled.

When we got back to class we all felt tired. I hope other kids enjoy going on the class trips like we did.

Wiri Nicholas (1868-1954)

Last week, Room 11 and 12 went to Tawhitinui Marae. 2 of the things we did was go on a bush walk at Puketoki reserve and do some water testing.

Last week we went to Puketoki reserve to do some water testing. My highlight for water testing was walking up the slippery rocks by the heavy water and putting my net in the running water. I really enjoyed seeing the nitrates change from clear to a light lavender colour.

After having half an hour doing water testing we finally swapped to do the bush walk with Lana and Sophia's dad. My favourite part was getting clay and seeing a lot of native and common trees. My low light was stepping in the muddy clay and dirt. Every time we went past a sign every always got to take turns reading a paragraph out loud to everyone.

I loved this trip so much that I hope we do this next term or year. Thank you to all the parents for all your help we really appreciate it.

Tawhitinui Marae

Funny, exciting, and proud. In Week 4, Rm 11 and 12 went to Tawhitinui Marae. I learned a lot. The funniest moment was the camp concert. Some people didn’t sleep that well that night though.

I learned a lot from the trip. One of my favourite learning activities was water testing. I found out that the Puketoki river had 0.1 nitrates in it and was 14 Degrees. I also learned a lot about the history of Tawhitinui marae. I was taught that Tawhitinui means long distance.

The funniest moment was our Mauao play. I was Mauao (or the nameless one). The funniest bit was when I got dragged on the floor because I got rejected by Puwhenua.

I had the best sleep. Although, I didn’t fall asleep until 9.30pm. I didn’t wake up to any noises. Sadly, I woke up at 6.30am, but I hoped to wake up at 8.00am.

I loved the trip so much and I’m so thankful for the parents who came. I hope all Tamariki have the chance to go to a marae.

Fun, food, and games. In week 4 we went on a noho with Room 11 and 12 (us). The marae was Tawhitinui. The marae was so big. We did a play and it was so funny, especially our play. The two classes also got to go up to the urupa (graveyard). Room 12 got to make plays. There were 3 groups, our group had 7 people in it. It was the legend of Mauao. I loved showing the play to room 11 and 12. Luke was Otanewainuku the strong one, I was Puwhenua the pretty one and Lauren was the nameless one - Mauao. We also went up to a urupa at the top of a hill. It was sad and cool at the same time, sad because of all the babies that had died and cool because of the history. On the way out we had to wash our hands so that no spirits followed us out. I hope the next camp is even better. And a huge thanks to the parents who came a long. And all the parents who made food. On Wednesday Room 12 went to a marae. Some of the best things we did were hot pools and water testing.

On Wednesday Room 12 went to Puketoki reserve. At Puketoki reserve I did water testing first. At water testing we did Temperature testing Second Alex put the Bit of paper in the water. On the piece of paper there are colourful little squares the bits of paper there were about 6 Different colours. Yellow was her brightest and it was about 12 degrees.

At the hot pools, at the start, I liked swimming around and jumping in at the deep end. Halfway through we had lunch. Hot chip sandwiches and chips. Then we got back in the pool and did piggy in the middle.

I really liked the noho and I think the other kids should do it.

In Term 3, week 4, Room 11 and 12 went to Tawhitinui marae for an overnight stay. On that stay 2 really fun things happened to me that I would like to share!

My first highlight from camp was running down the hill from the urupa with Charlotte. When we got close to the gate Charlotte and I realised that we were going way too fast, as quick as we could we started to slow down. We were lucky that we didn't crash into the gate. Charlotte and I called slowing down our ‘handbrake’, which was funny to me and Charlotte at least.

My second highlight was bedtime. My second highlight was bedtime because I got to do people's hair which I love doing, and I also put my hair up to sleep as well. After we were ready for bed we got to make a skit about either one of the Māori legends or something that had happened to us during our stay. My skit that I did with Alex and Scarlett was about Takurua. After we did our skit it was time for bed. When the lights were turned off there was still a shining light in my eyes. It came from outside, turns out that the light was annoying for Dad as well because he put his clothes on his face like a sleep mask.

This story is really just to give a big thank you to all the adults that came to help out, I loved the trip so much and I hope we can do another one day.

On Thursday Room 11 and 12 went to the hot pools.  My favouirte bit was doing bombs.

I thought I wasn’t swimming but I did and it was so much fun and I want to do this again

and have even more fun and I was talking about it for the whole weekend.

Thank you so much for all of the teachers and parents that came and helped with

preparing the kai. I had an amazing time and am proud that I stayed because this was

the first time I had stayed the night on any school trip.
